When the first GATE exam was conducted? The answer is- it was conducted on  February 26 1983. The admission used to be offered in IIT Bombay, Delhi ,Kharagpur, Kanpur and Madras and IISc  Banglore. GATE 2025 now a days is conducted for 30 papers and everything is online But in 1983 GATE was conducted for Seven papers only.

Science stream: Candidates who have obtained or will obtain before June 1983 a Master’s degree in any branch of science will have to choose one discipline from the following list.

 Agricultural Sciences;

 Chemistry; Earth Sciences;

 Life Sciences; 

Materials Science; 

Mathematics; 

Physics; 

Regional Planning

Scholarship and Duration of Course 

Only those who are admitted after qualifying at the G A T E will be entitled to scholarships for 18 months. Examinations will be held at different centres all over the country, as listed elsewhere in the Brochure.

Since there was no facility of internet so candidates had to send the application form in any of the five IITs or their regions as they are spread across Delhi ,Bombay ,Madras, Kharagpur ,Kanpur and Banglore

The application fee in 1983 was Rs.45 

How one gets the Application Form then?

Application was sent through post but before this the request for application form should be accompanied by a crossed Indian Postal Order for Rs. 5.00 drawn in favour of the concerned IIT/IISc (e .g . ‘Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay’) along with a self-addressed envelope (2 2 cm x 32 cm ) stamped for Rs. 4 .5 0. Money Orders will not be accepted.

Result of first GATE Exam

The result was declared in the month of April 1983
