PM Surya Ghar Yojana for HEIs: Solar Power Revolution in Universities and Colleges

PM Surya Ghar Yojana at HEIs – The UGC has sent the letter to HEIs for installation of solar rooftop in the Higher Educational Institutions. The PM Surya Ghar yojana is initiative of PM Narendra Modi to reduce the dependency on Green Energy.

The broader goal of this scheme is to encourage the installation of solar panels in institutions like universities, colleges, and other higher education centers to help reduce their carbon footprint, lower energy costs, and foster sustainability.

Now the higher educational institutions have to replace their power consumption from regular power to solar power. The first initiative was to cover the household for this. Now other institutions are being covered.

Key Objectives of the Initiative:

  • Promoting Renewable Energy: Encourages the adoption of solar energy to power campuses, reducing dependence on conventional electricity and fossil fuels.
  • Sustainability: Helps educational institutions contribute to India’s larger goal of increasing green energy usage and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Cost Savings: By installing solar power systems, institutions can reduce their electricity bills, allowing for more funds to be allocated to academic and infrastructural improvements.
  • Public-Private Partnerships: Institutions can partner with private solar companies for the installation and maintenance of these systems, creating a collaborative effort towards clean energy adoption.
  • Government Support: The government often provides financial incentives, subsidies, and other assistance to educational institutions to ease the transition towards renewable energy.

The scheme aligns with India’s broader push under the National Solar Mission to install more solar energy capacity and shift towards a more sustainable future.

  • How to Apply:
    • Visit the official National Portal for Rooftop Solar.
    • Select your state and Electricity Distribution company
    • Enter your electricity consumer number,mobile number and email
    • Login with your Consumer Number
    • Apply for the rooftop as per the forms
    • Once you get the feasibility approval,get the plant installed by any of the registered vendors in your Discom
    • Once Installation is completed submit the plant details and apply for net meter
    • Commissioning certificate will be generated from the portal,after installation of net meter and inspection by Discom
    • Once you get the commissioning report. Submit the bank account details and a cancelled cheque. You will receive your subsidy in your bank account within 30 days
