Naima Khatoon appointed vice chancellor of AMU

AMU has the new VC Ms. Naima Khatoon the first VC of AMU in independent India. In the history of AMU no woman VC was there. Before Naima Khatoon AMU had women Chancellor Begum Sultan Jahan in the year 1920.

On Monday Ms Naima Khatoon was appointed after receiving the approval from President of India Droupadi Murmu, the president is the visitor to the AMU

The notification reads that Ms Naima who was principal of women college has been appointed the VC of AMU for the period of five years or the date on which she reaches 75 years of age whichever is earlier.

AMU authorities have taken the Election commission of india permission regarding the appointment of VC as the model code of conduct is in place due to current Lok Sabha election.

the ECI has put a condition to the appointed of the new AMU V-C saying that “no publicity shall be there and no political mileage may be derived from it”.

There was controversy on her appointment as VC of AMU as her appointment was challenged in Allahabad high court in November 2023. The petitioner had alleged that she was shortlisted by a committee which is headed by her husband Mohammed Gulrez who was serving as the acting VC of university. Later the petition was dismissed

Ms. Naima Khatton completed her phd in psychology from AMU and took charge of lecturer in the same department in 1988. She was given promotion in 2006 and appointed professor. In her last role she was the prinicipal of women college

AMU celebrated its 100 years as a university in September 2020, becoming one of the oldest universities in India. The university had no woman vice chancellor since Independence.
