Change in MBBS Seats 2025

The government has shown its intention to add 75,000 seats in the medical colleges in the next five years.

Number of MBBS Seats 2025
The government plans to upgrade existing colleges and add new ones, thereby increasing PG medical seats. Over the last 10 years, the number of colleges has increased from 387 to 780. Consequently, the government expanded MBBS seats from 51,000 in 2014 to 1,18,190, marking a 130% increase. Similarly, it boosted PG seats from 31,000 to 74,306, reflecting a 138% increase.
This comes with a government proposal to expand the education infrastructure in the country. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare implements the Centrally Sponsored Scheme to enhance government medical colleges by increasing seats in underserved areas.
