JEE Advanced is a highly competitive engineering entrance exam in India that is conducted annually by any one of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). The purpose of the JEE Advanced exam is to assess the in-depth understanding of concepts and analytical thinking of candidates who wish to pursue undergraduate engineering courses at the IITs, which are considered to be among the most prestigious engineering institutes in India. The JEE Advanced score is also used as a possible basis for admission by Indian applicants to non-Indian universities such as the University of Cambridge. Thus, JEE Advanced is an important exam for students who aspire to pursue a career in engineering.
To be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced, a candidate must first clear the JEE Main exam and be among the top 2.5 lakh rank holders. The exam pattern for JEE Advanced is well-balanced and tests the in-depth understanding of concepts as well as analytical thinking of the candidates through multiple-choice questions, questions with multiple answers, and numerical value questions. The exam is divided into two papers, each of three hours in duration, and covers three subjects – Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The weightage of questions from classes 11 and 12 varies for each subject. Thus, a candidate must have a strong foundation in the subjects and be well-versed in the exam pattern to perform well in JEE Advanced.
Preparation for JEE Advanced requires a well-laid plan, starting with getting a hold of the syllabus and understanding basic concepts. Time management is crucial, and a daily schedule should be drafted to ensure all subjects are covered. Regular practice and solving as many numerical problems as possible are essential to make a strong hold on the concepts. Choosing the right study material and not ignoring NCERT books are also critical in preparing for JEE Advanced. Quality preparation is more important than quantity, and emphasis should be given to understanding the concepts rather than memorizing them [9]. Keeping track of strengths and weaknesses and setting realistic goals can also help in clearing JEE Advanced.

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria
As per the JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria, only the Top 2,50,000 qualified (including all categories) candidates of the Mains Exam can appear. The percentages of various categories of candidates to be shortlisted are 10% for GEN-EWS, 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, and the remaining 40.5% is OPEN for all. Within each of these five categories, a 5% horizontal reservation is available for PwD candidates.
Who is not eligible to appear for JEE Advanced?
A candidate should NOT have been admitted to an IIT irrespective of whether or not the candidate continued in the program OR accepted an IIT seat by reporting “online” / at a “reporting centre” in the past. Candidates whose admission to IITs was cancelled (for whatever reason) after joining any IIT are also NOT eligible to appear for JEE (Advanced
Criteria for Inclusion in a Rank List
The aggregate marks will be calculated as the sum of the marks obtained in Mathematics, Physics
and Chemistry. Candidates have to satisfy the subject-wise as well as the aggregate qualifying marks
to be included in a rank list.
Maximum aggregate marks: 360 (180 each in Paper 1 and Paper 2)
Maximum marks in Physics: 120 (60 each in Paper 1 and Paper 2)
Maximum marks in Chemistry: 120 (60 each in Paper 1 and Paper 2)
Maximum marks in Mathematics: 120 (60 each in Paper 1 and Paper 2)

JEE Advanced Books for entrance exam
For physics, Concepts of Physics Vol I and II by H.C. Verma is highly recommended. Verma’s Physical Concepts is a well-liked book among JEE Advanced candidates, as it thoroughly covers all physics topics and includes a large number of solved problems. Other useful physics books include Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday, Resnick & Walker and Problems in General Physics by I.E. Irodov. NCERT Physics Class 11 and 12 and Understanding Physics by DC Pandey are also highly recommended.
In terms of chemistry, Concise Inorganic Chemistry by J. D. Lee and Modern Approach to Chemical Calculations by R. C. Mukherjee (for practice) are highly recommended. For organic chemistry, some of the best books include Organic Chemistry by M. S. Chauhan, Morrison & Boyd, and O.P. Tandon. For physical chemistry, O.P. Tandon is a good choice.
Mathematics is an essential subject for JEE Advanced, and there are several recommended books for preparation. Maths XI & XII by R.D. Sharma is highly recommended for basics, along with NCERT books. Other useful books include Objective Mathematics for JEE Main & Advanced and Other Engineering Entrance Examinations by R.D. Sharma, Trigonometry & Geometry by S. L. Loney, and Calculus – Problems in Calculus of One Variable by I.A. Maron. Comprehensive Mathematics for JEE Advanced by Tata McGraw and Cengage Maths by G TIWANI are also highly recommended.
