Kanpur, December 26, 2024: The 29th Inter-IIT Staff Sports Meet, which started on December 19 and featured outstanding athletic performances by participants from across the IITs showcasing their talent, determination, and camaraderie, came to an end today at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) with a closing ceremony honoring the spirit of sportsmanship and unity.

Renowned mountaineer Shri Satyarup Siddhanta served as the event’s Chief Guest and inspired the ceremony with his presence. Professors Braj Bhushan, Deputy Director; Pratik Sen, Dean of Student Affairs, IITK; Aditya Kelkar, Co-Convener of the Inter-IIT Sports Meet; Gopakumar, Games Counselor; Syam Nair; and Debopam Das from IIT Kanpur also graced the concluding ceremony.
During the closing ceremony, Shri Satyarup Siddhanta said, “It is incredible to witness such a gathering of staff from all IITs, united by the spirit of sportsmanship and adventure. Sports are not just about winning, but about participation, teamwork, and camaraderie, which strengthens bonds and creates cherished memories. My journey from struggling with asthma to breaking records proves that no dream is impossible if pursued with perseverance. It doesn’t matter whether you win first, second, or third; what matters is the spirit of participation and collaboration. Dream big, chase those dreams relentlessly, and remember, every mountain—literal or professional—can be conquered with determination.”
IIT Kanpur took top place in the General Championship (Men’s Category), followed by IIT Roorkee and IIT Delhi. IIT Kanpur won the General Championship (Women’s Category), while IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur came in second and third, respectively. IIT Kanpur won the Overall Championship, showcasing their outstanding performance in a variety of sports.
The athletics portion of the 29th Inter IIT Staff Meet included outstanding performances. In the men’s division, Saksham Saraswat of IIT Delhi won first place in the 200, 400, and 800 meters, and Shanu Chopra of IIT Roorkee was the quickest man in the 100 meters. IIT Madras’ Sachin Kumar Sen took wins in the 1500- and 5000-meter races. IIT Palakkad’s Alok Singh won gold in the shot put, discus throw, and hammer throw, dominating the throwing competitions. The 4×100-meter relay was won by the IIT Kanpur relay team, which included Rajdeep, Pradeep Yadav, Ram Kripal, and Akhlesh Mishra. IIT Madras’ Scariya K.C. won first position in the men’s over-55 100-meter competition.
In the sports competitions, Anurag Singh of IIT Bhilai won the men’s high jump title, and Probash Das of IIT Kharagpur won the men’s long jump title.
IIT Kharagpur’s Sangita Mondal was a standout in the women’s division, winning the 4×100-meter relay and taking first place in the 100-, 200-, and long-jump competitions. IIT Kanpur’s Anjali Dubey placed first in the discus throw competition and second in the javelin competition.
In the men’s athletics competition, IIT Kanpur won, while IIT Delhi and IIT Madras finished first and second, respectively. IIT Kharagpur won the title in the women’s athletics division, with IIT Kanpur coming in first and IIT Hyderabad in second.
Alok Singh from IIT Palakkad and Saksham Saraswat from IIT Delhi split the Best Male Athlete titles after winning three gold medals each. IIT Kharagpur’s Sangita Mondal won the title of Best Female Athlete after dominating several competitions.
Amazing talent was displayed in the throwing competitions. Purva Kherkar of IIT Hyderabad was the best in the women’s shot put and javelin throw, while Alok Singh of IIT Palakkad won gold in the men’s shot put, discus, and hammer throw events.
IIT Bombay won the Men’s Badminton title, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Delhi came in second and third, and IIT Bombay’s Shailendra Sania was named Best Player; IIT Kanpur won the Women’s Badminton title, IIT Mandi and IIT Bombay came in second and third, and Khushi Rai from IIT Mandi was named Best Player; IIT Mandi won the Men’s Basketball title, IIT Kanpur and IIT Guwahati placed second and third, and IIT Mandi’s Utsav Thakur was named Best Player.
IIT Hyderabad won first place in volleyball, followed by IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur in second and third place, respectively. IIT Hyderabad’s Anil Kumar was named the Best Player. IIT Roorkee emerged victorious in the cricket competition, while IIT Gandhinagar and IIT Madras placed first and second, respectively. IIT Roorkee’s Sahil Sardana was voted the tournament’s Best Player. IIT Kanpur won the football competition, while IIT Dhanbad and IIT Guwahati came in second and third, respectively. IIT Kanpur’s Hari Babu Prajapati was voted the game’s best player.
The flag being lowered to signal the end of the event and the transfer of the flag to the next host, IIT Hyderabad, marked the conclusion of the ceremony. The national anthem was played to end the occasion after the convenor gave the vote of thanks.
