GNOU PhD Programme. The admission to PhD in IGNOU is offered through an entrance exam. The IGNOU Entrance Exam is an important step for students seeking admission into IGNOU PhD programmes. To appear for the exam, candidates must have completed a master’s degree from a UGC-recognized university with a minimum score of 55%. The entrance exam is followed by an interview conducted by the university, which is mandatory for all applicants. Admission criteria ensure that only highly qualified and capable individuals enter the program..
There are 200 seats for PhD programme and 50 for Mphil
The IGNOU PhD Entrance Exam is a three-hour exam consisting of 100 questions, out of which 50% of the questions focus on research methods and the other 50% of the questions focus on a specific topic. The qualifying marks for the examination are 50% for open-category candidates and 45% for SC/ST/OBC and PWD candidates. The exam syllabus is based on UGC guidelines and covers a wide range of topics related to the subjects of study. In order to score well in the exam, candidates must thoroughly understand the syllabus. The entrance exam counts for 70% and the interview counts for 30%. Doctoral programs are available in both part-time and full-time formats. The PhD programs offered by ignou strictly adhere to the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for the Award of Doctoral Degree) Regulations 2022.

Duration of Programme :
The minimum and maximum duration after registration for the Ph.D. Programme shall be three years and six years respectively. The women candidates and Persons with Disability (more than 40% disability) may be allowed a relaxation of two years for Ph.D. in the maximum duration.
The maximum duration can be extended by one year with the approval of the Vice Chancellor. In such cases a prescribed fee will have to be paid by the student for the period of extension.

The PhD Programme in the social work will enable candidates from across the county, and particularly from far-flung areas and states/union territories, where there are no schools of social work, to pursue their research work leading to a doctoral degree.
Currently, the school has admitted three Research and Teaching Assistantship (RTAs) in 2009 for its doctoral programme in social work.
The Doctoral Programme in Social Work aims at training professionals (both teachers and practitioners) in the skills and competence related to the systematic investigation of various issues and problems in the area of Social Work.
