IGNOU PhD Programme

GNOU PhD Programme. The admission to PhD in IGNOU is offered through an entrance exam. The IGNOU Entrance Exam is an important step for students seeking admission into IGNOU PhD programmes. To appear for the exam, candidates must have completed a master’s degree from a UGC-recognized university with a minimum score of 55%. The entrance exam is followed by an interview conducted by the university, which is mandatory for all applicants. Admission criteria ensure that only highly qualified and capable individuals enter the program..

There are 200 seats for PhD programme and 50 for Mphil

The IGNOU PhD Entrance Exam is a three-hour exam consisting of 100 questions, out of which 50% of the questions focus on research methods and the other 50% of the questions focus on a specific topic. The qualifying marks for the examination are 50% for open-category candidates and 45% for SC/ST/OBC and PWD candidates. The exam syllabus is based on UGC guidelines and covers a wide range of topics related to the subjects of study. In order to score well in the exam, candidates must thoroughly understand the syllabus. The entrance exam counts for 70% and the interview counts for 30%. Doctoral programs are available in both part-time and full-time formats. The PhD programs offered by ignou strictly adhere to the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for the Award of Doctoral Degree) Regulations 2022.

IGNOU offers Ph.D programme under two categories: Part time and Full time. Both categories of students will be required to attend classes, if course work is allotted to them.

Anthropology studies humans with a holistic approach. The PhD in Anthropology is expected to promote a research culture in an integrated model and expand the knowledge base of the discipline. The PhD Anthropology degree program is designed to develop professional competencies in response to the demand for trained anthropologists in academic and research institutions, NGOs, governmental organizations and applied sciences. The aim of this programme is to provide in-depth knowledge of research methodology and issues related to bioethics and intellectual property rights which are of high importance in the view that the research in Biochemistry is based on biological samples. The courses include knowledge in various areas of specialization in which the candidate may be interested in pursuing the research. These courses will enable the researcher to refresh the basic concepts as well as learn the recent advances and techniques emerging in the chosen area of specialization.

PHDDV is an interdisciplinary programme with extension education and development studies components. Learners are required to take course work, deliver seminars and conduct research dealing with developmental issues from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Duration of Programme :
The minimum and maximum duration after registration for the Ph.D. Programme shall be three years and six years respectively. The women candidates and Persons with Disability (more than 40% disability) may be allowed a relaxation of two years for Ph.D. in the maximum duration.

The maximum duration can be extended by one year with the approval of the Vice Chancellor. In such cases a prescribed fee will have to be paid by the student for the period of extension.

Research is a systematic investigation into the phenomenon that results into the development of significant insights. The work of thesis is an original and significant contribution to the
advancement of world knowledge. Doctoral research may focus on individual creative practices, experimental work, historical studies, critical analysis, theoretical modeling. It may
include mathematical or computational modeling and may engage into philosophical, psychological, socio-cultural or anthropological, enquiry. Apart from the above, interdisciplinary research is encouraged. The PhD Programme in the social work will enable candidates from across the county, and particularly from far-flung areas and states/union territories, where there are no schools of social work, to pursue their research work leading to a doctoral degree.

Currently, the school has admitted three Research and Teaching Assistantship (RTAs) in 2009 for its doctoral programme in social work.

The Doctoral Programme in Social Work aims at training professionals (both teachers and practitioners) in the skills and competence related to the systematic investigation of various issues and problems in the area of Social Work. At this level, the study is expected to provide new and original insights into the problem or the area under investigation. The PhD Programme of IGNOU can be pursued by those who possess an MSW./MA (Social Work) degree. 

IGNOU had introduced a unique scheme of IGNOU-DEC Research and Teaching Assistantships (RTA), which is designed to meet the high-quality human resource requirements in teaching and research in the area of the highly technology intensive open and distance learning-ICT, web, satellite based and online learning in various disciplines of higher education, including Social Work.

The scheme is open to post-graduate holders in Social Work with consistently top academic record and who would like to do teaching and research in discipline of Social Work.
