The UPSC Engineering Preliminary Exam comprises two papers: General Studies and Engineering Aptitude, and an engineering discipline-specific paper. The General Studies and Engineering Aptitude paper includes topics such as current affairs, reasoning, and analytical ability, while the engineering discipline-specific paper covers topics related to the candidate’s chosen engineering discipline. For civil engineering, the topics include building materials, structural analysis, and geotechnical engineering, while for mechanical engineering, the topics include thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and manufacturing technology.

How to Download Engineering Services Preliminary Exam 2025 Admit Card ?

The admit card will be issued three weeks before the exam. The candidate can download e-Admission Certificate from the UPSC website [www.upsc.gov.in] for downloading by candidates

Minimum Educational Qualification: 

Candidate has obtained a degree in Engineering from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956; 

Or

Passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India); 

Or

Obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from such foreign University/College/Institution and under such conditions as may be recognised by the Government for the purpose from time to time, 

Or

  • passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India); 

Or

  • passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India; 

Or

  • passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November, 1959 Provided that a candidate for the post of Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts) and Indian Radio Regulatory Service Group ‘A’ may possess any of the above qualifications or the qualification mentioned below namely:- For Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engg. Posts) – M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.

  • Using black ball pen is must only.  Candidate cannot use any other pens with any color.  Do not use Pencil or ink pen. Candidates should note that any omission/mistake/discrepancy in encoding/filling of details in the OMR answer sheet, especially with regard to Roll Number and Test Booklet Series code, will render the answer sheet liable for rejection
  • PENALTY FOR WRONG ANSWERS (in Objective Type Papers)
  • Candidates should note that there will be penalty (Negative Marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the Objective Type Question Papers

UPSC ESE Prelims Exam Pattern

  • ESE has only objective questions in paper-I and paper II.
  • The Maximum mark in the UPSC ESE exam is 500 marks.Paper I 200 Marks Paper II 300 Marks
  • Paper I is common to all candidates, paper II will carry questions from the core engineering subject.
  • The total duration of the ESE Prelims exam is 5 hours.
  • Penalty for wrong answer and ⅓ mark is deducted.
