Pathetic Performance by Law Graduates in AIBE 18 Edition

AIBE 18

The AIBE exam was held on December 10 2023 which was 18 edition exam. This exam is held for getting the pass certificate to do the practice in Court.

Now the news came in that only 48.36% of the candidates who appeared for the 18th edition of the All India Bar Examination (AIBE 18)  passed. The reply came from a RTI filed .

The RTI filedAdocate Shibu Babu, sought information from the BCI on various concerns including the frequency of the examination, the registration process, repeated rescheduling of the exam, the testing agency, the reasons for not revealing marks obtained by a candidate, delays in publishing the final answer keys and delays in publishing the results.

The query also involved information on the number of candidates who registered, appeared, passed and failed.

Replying to this query the BCI revealed that a total of 1,48,781 candidates had registered for the exam, out of whom 1,44,014 appeared.

Out of the people who appeared, 69,646 (48.36%) passed and 74,368 (51.64%) failed.

During the Covid 19 the exam was held once though it is held twice a year.

The BCI has also mentioned that 7 questions from the exam were removed following the decision of a High-Level Monitoring Committee that considered objections received from various candidates of AIBE-18.

In the judgment, the apex court had held that a public authority is not required to furnish information which requires drawing of inferences, or making of assumptions, or which qualifies as an advice or opinion.

BCI officials were not available for comment at the time of publishing this story.

The similar situation arose in 2012 where 63 per cent candidates have passed the exam

In one such incident Bar Council of Delhi barred 4778 provisionally enrolled advocates who could not qualify All India Bar Examination (AIBE) since 2010. The official notification also states that these advocates cannot practice law until they qualify AIBE. The council has also asked all the regional courts, tribunals and bar associations not to allow such advocates to appear before the Hon’ble court, or even vote in any bar election.
