Updating your Aadhaar card can be done online or offline, depending on the type of update you need to make. Here’s a step-by-step guide for both methods:

1. Online Update

The online update facility allows you to change your address and some other basic details.

Steps to Update Address Online:

  • Visit the UIDAI Website:
    • Go to the UIDAI official website.
  • Login with Your Aadhaar:
    • Click on “My Aadhaar” and then select “Update Your Aadhaar”.
    • Choose “Update Aadhaar Online”.
    • Log in using your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  • Select the Update Fields:
    • Choose the information you want to update (usually, only the address can be updated online).
    • Provide the necessary information.
  • Upload Supporting Documents:
    • Upload a scanned copy of the proof of the new address. Make sure the document is self-attested.

Document for identity: 

  • School leaving certificate / school transfer certificate with photograph 
  • Marksheet/certificate issued by recognised Board of Education or University with photograph 
  • PAN/e-PAN card 
  • Government/statutory-body/PSU-issued employee/pensioner photo identity card, pension payment order or medi-claim card
  • Driving licence 
  • Freedom fighter photo identity card

Document for address: 

  • Electricity, water, gas or telephone/mobile/broadband bill (not more than three months old)
  • Duly signed and stamped Scheduled Commercial Bank / Post Office passbook with photograph 
  • Duly signed and stamped Scheduled Commercial Bank / Post Office account/credit-card statement (not more than three months old) 
  • Valid rent, lease or leave & licence agreement 
  • Certificate issued in UIDAI Standard Certificate format by MP, MLA, MLC, Municipal Councillor, Group ‘A’ or ‘B’ Gazetted Officer, EPFO Officer or Tahsildar 
  • Certificate issued in UIDAI Standard Certificate format by Village Panchayat Head/Secretary, Village Revenue Officer or equivalent (for rural areas)
  • Certificate issued to a student in UIDAI Standard Certificate format by the head of the recognised educational institution concerned 
  • Property tax receipt (not more than one year old) 
  • Valid registered sale agreement or gift deed 
  • Government/statutory-body/PSU-issued accommodation allotment letter (not more than one year old)
  • Life or medical insurance policy (not more than one year old)
  • Review and Submit:
    • Review the details you entered, ensure everything is correct, and then submit your request.
  • Pay the Fee:
    • There might be a nominal fee (around INR 50) for processing your request. Pay this fee online.
  • Receive the Update Request Number (URN):
    • After submitting the request, you will receive a URN, which you can use to check the status of your update.

2. Offline Update

For updating details like your name, date of birth, mobile number, or biometric information, you’ll need to visit an Aadhaar Enrollment/Update Center.

Steps for Offline Update:

  • Locate the Nearest Aadhaar Enrollment/Update Center:
    • Use the UIDAI website to find the nearest center.
  • Visit the Center:
    • Carry your Aadhaar card and original documents that need to be updated (e.g., birth certificate, passport, etc.).
  • Fill the Update Form:
    • At the center, fill out the Aadhaar Correction/Update Form with the necessary details.
  • Submit Documents:
    • Submit the form along with original copies of your supporting documents. The operator will verify your documents and return the originals.
  • Biometric Verification:
    • If required, your biometric data (fingerprints, iris scan) may be taken again.
  • Pay the Fee:
    • Pay the applicable fee (typically INR 50) for the update.
  • Receive the Acknowledgment Slip:
    • You will receive an acknowledgment slip with the Update Request Number (URN) for tracking the status of your update.

How can I submit the documents online?

 (1) Go to https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/, and log in using your Aadhaar number and one-time password (OTP) received on your registered mobile number.

 (2) Check your identity and address details displayed in your profile.

 (3) If the details displayed in your profile are incorrect, take action as described in response to Question 5 below. 

(4) If the details displayed in your profile are correct, please click on the tab ‘I verify that the above details are correct’. 

(5) Select the identity document from the drop-down menu that you wish to submit. 

(6) Upload your identity document (size less than 2 MB; file format JPEG, PNG or PDF)

(7) Select the address document from the drop-down menu that you wish to submit. 

(8) Upload your address document (size less than 2 MB; file format JPEG, PNG or PDF).

 (9) Submit your consent.

Checking Update Status:

You can check the status of your Aadhaar update online using the URN on the UIDAI website.

Processing Time:

The update process usually takes around 2-3 weeks. Once updated, you can download the updated e-Aadhaar from the UIDAI website.
