On August 21, 2024, IIM Rohtak had the privilege of hosting Dr. Gautam Sen, a globally renowned political economist and one of the founding figures of the graduate program in International Political Economy at the London School of Economics. His visit was marked by an insightful address to the PGP15 batch on the theme “India Beyond 2047,” a forward-looking discussion on India’s potential trajectory and the strategies required to ensure sustained growth and development in the coming decades.
Prof. Dheeraj Sharma, Director of IIM Rohtak, extended a warm welcome to Dr. Sen, highlighting the crucial role that academic interactions play in shaping the leaders of tomorrow. He expressed deep appreciation for Dr. Sen’s extensive experience as an academician, journalist, and advisor, and lauded his prolific contributions to literature and thought. Drawing parallels with the dystopian visions of Orwell and Huxley, Prof. Sharma remarked on the overwhelming flood of information in today’s world and stressed the importance of verifying and re-verifying information before accepting it as truth. He expressed confidence that Dr. Sen’s insights would bring much-needed clarity to the complex landscape of contemporary global affairs.
Dr. Gautam Sen’s address was both thought-provoking and visionary. He emphasized that the coming decades could belong to India, thanks to its rich human capital. However, he cautioned that to fully harness this potential, the nation must foster unity and innovative thinking to navigate the rapid transformations in industry and overcome historical challenges. Reflecting on India’s economic history and the detrimental effects of colonial exploitation, Dr. Sen pointed out that good policies alone are not enough—they must be effectively implemented. He placed particular emphasis on the importance of entrepreneurialism in driving innovation and growth, and in escaping the productivity trap. Furthermore, he advocated for the need to balance the control of inequality with the encouragement of entrepreneurial spirit. Dr. Sen inspired the students to step up as leaders, encouraging them to believe in their ability to drive positive change and help shape a vibrant future for the nation.
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Prof. Sharma, rounding off an afternoon filled with learning and inspiration.
